Midland Senior Women's Golf Association

IMG 0251 sOur annual match against Wales Senior Women was held at Shifnal Golf Club and a big thankyou is extended to Ann Peters (Lady Captain), the club and groundstaff for having made us all so very welcome and presenting the course in excellent condition. The weather was mainly cold and cloudy, with a sprinkling of rain in parts, but this did not dampen our spirits as our team prepared itself for the betterball matches, off scratch.  A big thanks to the team, which comprised of the following ladies:

Julie Brown (Captain MWSGA) - Trentham
Caroline Corrigan - Ingestre Park
Anne Fern - Whittington Heath
Elaine Hancock - Spalding
Sally Jee - Luffenham Heath
Helen Lowe (Vice MWSGA) - Scraptoft
Ann Peters - Shifnal
Suzanne Pretty - Longcliffe
Helena Rean - Whittington Heath
Fiona Sharman - Luffenham Heath
Sally Sketcher - Trentham

Helena Steward - Spalding.

Thanks also to our local support, Sue Pidgeon, who came to see us all off.

Our lead pair Julie Brown and Ann Peters had a closely contested match against the strong paring of Ann Lewis and Andrea Hughes and the match was decided on the very last putt on the 18th, though unfortunately was in favour of our opponents. Helen Lowe and Suzanne Pretty got off to a great start and Suzanne’s putter was hot! They held their lead throughout and Suzanne finished the match on the 15th with a great eagle which saw them win their match 5 and 3.

Sally Sketcher and Fiona Sharman though up after 9 were on the wrong side of a putting display from their opponents, who turned the match round and finished with a  close loss of 2 and 1. Sally Jee and Helena Rean fitted in well together and a closing two birdies from Sally sealed their 5 and 4 victory. The match of Elaine Hancock and Caroline Corrigan finished before our 5th pairing and despite playing some good golf, finished in Wales favour with a 3 and 2 win.

We therefore needed Helena Steward and Anne Fern to give us a win so we would retain the trophy. Walking in from the 17th it was hard to tell, however their steady golf and hard fought game finished in our favour and they had secured us a 2 and 1 win. All matches were played in great spirit and it was good to see everyone enjoy their games and share some renewed, or indeed for many, forge new friendships.

Overall a successful day as our halved match means we retain the “Pigeon” trophy and we look forward to defending again next year at Aberdovey Golf Club in Wales on Monday 7th July 2025. Many thanks and congratulations to all ladies who represented the Midlands in this match.
